Do you have hard water? If you live in DeWitt, Piatt, or Champaign counties you do. These areas not only have hard water, but it's classified as Very Hard Water.
Okay, but what does Very Hard Water mean to me? So many things, we don't have time to mention them all. So today we will focus on what it means to your hair.
Hard water means that your water has a large amount of naturally occurring minerals in it. You know that brown water or rust stains in your sink, that color is from the minerals in the water. When you wash your hair in this water the minerals build up on your hair strands and your skin. This can cause your skin to feel itchy and dry. Those minerals that cause the rust color in your sink, can also cause rust color in your hair. So for those of you that color or lighten your hair and hate that red tint, it's the mineral build up!
What can you do about the mineral build up and get that rust/red out of your hair? Get a Malibu Treatment, especially BEFORE any color or chemical service. I can't stress this enough, the minerals damage your hair and when mixed with color or perm solution cause an unwanted chemical reaction. This chemical reaction can change the color of your hair, prevent color from adhering to your hair, and worse yet, can cause multiple levels of damage to your hair. Have you ever gone to get highlights with foils and even though you weren't sitting under the dryer the foils and hair seemed to be getting warm? That's from the chemical reaction with the unwanted mineral build up in your hair.
Don't let cost be the only determining factor in who you choose for your hair and chemical services, a Malibu Treatment adds to the cost and time of your service, but it's well worth it. It's like an insurance policy for your hair.
Here's the link to my blog about Malibu treatments from 2016 with more important information for you. https://sarahreynoldsspa.blogspot.com/2016/01/jan-19-2016-what-is-malibu-treatment.html Please take the time to read this blog. Next time you schedule your hair appointment, book a Malibu Treatment too, you'll be glad you did. If you get a Malibu treatment on a regular basis, the follow up treatments will not take nearly as long as the first treatment. The first treatment takes about an hour, follow up treatments will only take about 30 minutes. If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact me and I will be happy to help you.

What can I do to look younger?
There's one thing we all can't deny, and that is that we are all aging every day. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could stop the aging process, and reverse it too? While science hasn't quite found the true fountain of youth as of yet, there are things that we can do to look younger than we do currently.
Why is it that some women, and men, look 10 or 20 years older than they actually are, yet others look 10 or 20 years younger than they actually are? Yes genetics plays a part, however, it's not only genetics. Factors that affect the appearance of aging is skin and hair care, diet, water consumption, and more.
A few tips to looking younger.
-Get plenty of sleep. When you don't get enough sleep your body is not able to repair itself and fight off the harm from daily environmental exposure. A lack of sleep contributes to dark circles under your eyes.
-Drink plenty of water. Water is crucial to your health and aging. When you don't drink enough water you become dehydrated which drastically affects your skin and the appearance of aging. Your total water intake on a daily basis should be the equivalent to half of your body weight in ounces. This includes water and foods you consume with water content, for example melon or other fruits. Remember, when it comes to caffeinated drinks or drinks with alcohol, for every cup of these type of beverages you consume you must drink 3 cups of water to replace the water that they pulled out of your body.
-Sunscreen! I can't emphasize this enough. UVA rays from the sun cause accelerated aging of the skin and hair. To prevent aging from sun exposure always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen every day. Your sunscreen must specify that it is broad spectrum for UVA and UVB rays.
-Antioxidants. Yes, every day we are oxidizing from environmental factors. Have you ever seen a nail or piece of metal rust? The rust is caused by oxidation. The same thing is happening to your skin, hair, and body every day. Antioxidants fight against this oxidation process and free radicals that cause aging. Where do I get antioxidants? Make sure you choose a skin care and hair care line that has antioxidants. Also make sure you are supplementing your diet daily with foods rich in antioxidants.
-Skin Care routine. If you don't want to show aging you must have a daily skin care routine. Don't think that you don't have time for a daily skin care routine. A daily routine does not necessarily have to require a lot of time or steps. Make sure you are using the proper skin care line for your skin type. If you have never seen a skin care therapist (Esthetician), schedule an appointment now. It is crucial that you know your correct skin type or if you have any skin conditions that need special care.
-Professional skin care line. Yes, there is a huge difference in the skin care that you can buy at your local drug store or department store and a professional skin care line. Professional skin care is much more effective than over the counter lines. Isn't professional skin care more expensive than what I can buy over the counter? Not necessarily. Of course cost depends on the line that you use, but in general it is not any more expensive to purchase professional lines than over the counter.
Ok. Now we know how to prevent the appearance of aging, but how do I reverse the signs of aging that I already have? There are many professional skin care treatments available today to help reverse the signs of aging. Surgical procedures and botox are not your only options. There are also many great skin care lines available now to help repair and reverse the signs of aging.
A few professional treatments available are:
-Microdermabrasion, This treatment removes the build up of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin that contribute to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores.
-Non-Surgical Face-lift, This is a treatment that helps to tighten and tone the skin reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.
-Microneedling, This treatment helps with product penetration deeper into the skin to be more effective, helps tighten and tone skin, helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging.
-Oxygen Facial, This treatment helps to increase blood circulation to the treated area, detoxifies your skin, and draws out impurities from daily exposure to environmental toxins and pushes free radicals to the surface.
-Geisha Facial, This treatment helps to clarify, protect, repair and illuminate the skin.
-Body Treatments/ wraps, help to detox, sooth, and push out free radicals.
All treatments should be followed up with proper home care to continue the process of repair and prevention. Your skin care therapist (Esthetician) will instruct you on the best line of home care for your particular skin types and needs.
Ok. We have talked a lot about the skin and anti-aging skin care. What about the hair? The hair is also exposed to environmental toxins and oxidation. For younger looking healthier hair we should start with a Malibu Treatment (for information on Malibu Treatments please see our blog on this topic). Deep conditioning treatments are also important as well as you home hair care routine. What products are you using on your hair? Do they have any anti-aging properties? A fabulous line of hair care with anti-aging properties and is all natural is Monat. For more information about Monat products and hair care please contact me or visit www.sarahreynolds.mymonat.com.
In order to know what the best products for your particular hair type and condition are please visit a Licensed Cosmetologist.
At Sarah Reynolds Spa, we have professional hair treatments for anti-aging as well as professional skin care treatments for anti-aging.
Another item that can help you look younger is choosing the proper hair color and makeup. Are you choosing a color that complements your skin tone? Does your hair color look natural? Are you using the proper foundation? Are you using the proper amount of foundation? Are you using a foundation primer appropriate for your skin type? Again for assistance please contact me or a licensed Cosmetologist and Skin Care Therapist (Esthetician) in your area.
For more information or to schedule an appointment contact me at www.sarahreynolds.abmp.com or (309) 202-1951. Remember online scheduling and gift certificates are available.

Exfoliation, What is it? Why is it important?
Today's topic is exfoliation. This is extremely important yet many people don't know what it is or anything about it. So today we are going to discuss it briefly.
What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation, in brief, is the removal of dead skin cell build up from the top layer of skin, which leaves your skin smooth and glowing.
What areas should I exfoliate?
All skin needs regular exfoliation. From head to toe, your entire body. Yes, this includes your scalp.
Why should I exfoliate?
If you don't exfoliate regularly the dead skin cell build up can block your pores causing acne, and on your scalp hair loss. Your skin may also feel rough or bumpy. Exfoliating allows the absorption of moisturizer and other skin care products. If you don't exfoliate your products are not getting through the dead cell build up to benefit your skin. Regular exfoliation will leave your skin looking younger and healthy.
How often should I exfoliate?
The frequency of exfoliation depends on the part of the body and the exfoliant you are using. There are two main forms of exfoliation, mechanical and chemical. Mechanical exfoliation uses a form of scrub to mechanically rub on the skin to remove dead cell build up. A chemical exfoliation uses certain types of acids to break up the cell build up without scrubbing. Typically you will exfoliate 1-3 times per week depending on your method of exfoliation. Exfoliation is done after you cleanse, but before you apply products or moisturize. Over exfoliation causes your skin to be dry, irritated, or damaged.
What kind of exfoliate should I choose?
The exfoliant you use on your skin depends on your skin condition and sensitivity. To determine the best exfoliant you should schedule an appointment with a professional esthetician (Sarah Reynolds Spa), The wrong exfoliator can damage your skin or cause your current conditions to worsen.
Can I use the same exfoliant I use on my body on my face?
Typically you will use a different exfoliant on your face than you would your body. The skin on your face is more sensitive and not as thick as the skin on some other parts of your body. It is best to have one exfoliant for your body and a separate exfoliant for your face. On your scalp you will need to use an exfoliating shampoo. The exfoliating shampoo that I typically recommend to clients is the Monat Men's 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner. This is an all natural product that works great! For more information on Monat products contact Sarah Reynolds Spa or visit, http://sarahreynolds.mymonat.com Monat also has great products for thinning hair and hair loss.
Are you ready to start your exfoliation routine? Contact Sarah Reynolds Spa to set up an appointment for your personal skin analysis and find out what is the best product for you to use. Call (309) 202-1951 or visit www.sarahreynolds.abmp.com to schedule your appointment.

What is detoxing and why is it important to me?
Today's topic is about detoxing and why it's important to you.
What is detoxing?
Detoxing takes many forms, the main purpose is to pull out toxins and impurities that don't belong or naturally occur in our bodies. What toxins or impurities? Preservatives that are in everything now from your food to your shampoo. Environmental toxins that are in the air that we can't avoid from factories, farming chemicals, exhaust from vehicles, etc. Prescription and over the counter medications which for the most part are purely chemicals. Chemicals are not good for your body or your health. While the medications may help your health condition the chemicals are hurting you at the same time.
Over time these various toxins continue building up in our bodies. They don't have a way to leave the body on their own, instead they leach on to our bodies. They make us sick, tired, cause aging.
How can I remove these toxins from my body by detoxing. As I stated there are many forms of detoxification, today we are only going to discuss a few.
Ion Detox Foot Bath
A good Ion Detox Foot Bath is made by Optimum. This process sets up a type of osmosis condition, which drains out toxins within your body. When you first place your feet in the water, the water is clear. By the end of the bath, the water has changed in color due to the cellular waste and impurities. Impurities are pulled from the body, improving the body's natural resilience. The cells show marked improvement after just one bath, are more hydrated, cells are working more efficiently and the meridians are balanced and energized. With regular foot baths you can achieve cellular cleansing, anti-aging, boosted immune system, clearer skin complexion, activates the body's natural elimination system (including lymph nodes), joint/pain relief, weight loss, increased circulation, reduced stress and fatigue, reduced swelling/inflammation, improved joint stiffness, and more.
For this type of detoxification it's recommended that you have a 35 minute treatment two - three times a week until you have completed 14 sessions, this is considered a deep cleanse. Can anyone use this treatment? If you have a pacemaker you are not able to receive an Ion Detox Foot Bath. Infants cannot receive this treatment. Toddlers and children may receive a variated form of this treatment. For more information contact Sarah Reynolds Spa.
Body Wraps
Another good method of detoxification is with body wraps. Some body wraps such as our Seaweed and French Green Clay Wrap is great for detoxification. French Green Clay and selected marine clays are infused with amino acids, Vitamin E, several extracts and Kelp are massaged into the skin, resulting in skin cell stimulation and detoxification. If you are allergic to seaweed, iodine, or shellfish this wrap should be avoided.
Our Bioslmming wrap is also good for detoxification. Along with detoxifying it fights cellulite, fat deposits, and stretch marks.
A series of wraps is recommended for the most benefit. If you are claustrophobic you may not want to choose a wrap for detoxification.
Internal detoxification
You can also detox internally through the use of foods and supplements. Juicing diets are great. If you don't have time to juice, then I highly recommend Living Fuel. Living Fuel is a powdered nutritional drink that is great for detoxification and balancing the body. You just make a shake or smoothie with this powder and drink it in place of one meal a day. I like to use it for breakfast. For information on where to get Living Fuel contact Sarah Reynolds Spa.
Essential oils are also good for detoxing. Lemon essential oil is especially good for this and easy to use. Contact Sarah Reynolds Spa for more information on essential oils and where to get them. Do not take any essential oils internally without discussing it with Sarah or an Aromatherapist.
Also good for starting a detoxification internally is to start with a Coffee enema.
Lymph Drainage
Manual Lymph Drainage is great to go along with any detox program. The lymphatic system is what fights of disease, so it needs to be kept healthy and cleansed. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage should only be performed by a licensed professional. Contact Sarah to schedule a Lymph Drainage Massage.
Reflexology
Reflexology is great any time to help promote optimal organ and nerve function, increase lymph flow and blood circulation. Reflexology should only be performed by a licensed professional.
There are so many more ways to detox your body, we just don't have time to discuss them all. All of the above methods discussed are available at Sarah Reynolds Spa. Sarah is licensed and has training in all of these services. To determine which method may be appropriate for you, schedule a consultation with Sarah Reynolds Spa.
Never start a detoxification program without first speaking to a healthcare professional.
Have a great and healthy day!

Jan. 19, 2016 What is a Malibu Treatment and why should I get one?
Today's topic is a Malibu Treatment. What is it and why should I get one?
A Malibu Treatment is used to remove mineral deposits, chlorine, and other impurities from your hair. This is an in salon treatment only, it cannot be performed at home.
Why do mineral deposits, chlorine, and other impurities need to be removed from my hair?
Mineral deposits, chlorine, and other impurities have a huge effect on your hair and the health of your hair. They can cause hair challenges such as:
Challenges with manageability causing for use of more styling products to achieve desired look.
Dry texture with little shine.
Very dry feeling hair that lacks shine but appears to have some volume due to severe mineral buildup.
Frizzy
Difficulty achieving the hair color you want and difficulty keeping your color from fading.
Blonde and highlighted hair may lose vibrancy, appear muddy, lack shine, have a brassy or ash/green tones.
Constant breakage problems, hair lacks brightness.
Difficulty keeping a perm, hair feels dry and perm falls out.
Symptoms associated with dandruff, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea can flare up seasonally.
Extreme dry scalp/skin
Mineral build up can block follicles which then blocks hair growth.
Hair loss
Where do these minerals come from and how do they get in my hair?
The minerals, chlorine, and other impurities come from the water you shampoo your hair in and bathe in and the environment around you.
Everyone should receive a Malibu Treatment on a monthly basis. It is not an expensive service and it will save you so many hair woes. Your Malibu Treatment should be followed up with proper home care with the appropriate shampoo and treatment for you. To help determine the best home care protocol for you, I recommend bringing in a fresh sample of your water that you shampoo with or bathe in. Then the water can be tested to find out how high the mineral and chlorine content is of your water. The closer you live to the water treatment facility, the more chlorine you will have in your water. The water test is inexpensive as well, and well worth it to help save your hair.
A Malibu Treatment can be done as a service by itself or added to another service such as color or perm.
I recommend scheduling your Malibu Treatment with Sarah Reynolds Spa today! And don't forget to bring your fresh water sample with you to be tested!
Enjoy your day!!
