Exfoliation, What is it? Why is it important?

Today's topic is exfoliation.  This is extremely important yet many people don't know what it is or anything about it.  So today we are going to discuss it briefly.

What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation, in brief, is the removal of dead skin cell build up from the top layer of skin, which leaves your skin smooth and glowing.

What areas should I exfoliate?
All skin needs regular exfoliation.  From head to toe, your entire body.  Yes, this includes your scalp.

Why should I exfoliate?
If you don't exfoliate regularly the dead skin cell build up can block your pores causing acne, and on your scalp hair loss.  Your skin may also feel rough or bumpy.  Exfoliating allows the absorption of moisturizer and other skin care products.  If you don't exfoliate your products are not getting through the dead cell build up to benefit your skin.  Regular exfoliation will leave your skin looking younger and healthy.

How often should I exfoliate?
The frequency of exfoliation depends on the part of the body and the exfoliant you are using.  There are two main forms of exfoliation, mechanical and chemical.  Mechanical exfoliation uses a form of scrub to mechanically rub on the skin to remove dead cell build up.  A chemical exfoliation uses certain types of acids to break up the cell build up without scrubbing.  Typically you will exfoliate 1-3 times per week depending on your method of exfoliation.  Exfoliation is done after you cleanse, but before you apply products or moisturize.  Over exfoliation causes your skin to be dry, irritated, or damaged.

What kind of exfoliate should I choose?
The exfoliant you use on your skin depends on your skin condition and sensitivity.  To determine the best exfoliant you should schedule an appointment with a professional esthetician (Sarah Reynolds Spa),  The wrong exfoliator can damage your skin or cause your current conditions to worsen.

Can I use the same exfoliant I use on my body on my face?
Typically you will use a different exfoliant on your face than you would your body.  The skin on your face is more sensitive and not as thick as the skin on some other parts of your body.  It is best to have one exfoliant for your body and a separate exfoliant for your face.  On your scalp you will need to use an exfoliating shampoo.  The exfoliating shampoo that I typically recommend to clients is the Monat Men's 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner.  This is an all natural product that works great!  For more information on Monat products contact Sarah Reynolds Spa or visit, http://sarahreynolds.mymonat.com Monat also has great products for thinning hair and hair loss.

What is detoxing and why is it important to me?

Today's topic is about detoxing and why it's important to you.

What is detoxing?
Detoxing takes many forms, the main purpose is to pull out toxins and impurities that don't belong or naturally occur in our bodies.  What toxins or impurities?  Preservatives that are in everything now from your food to your shampoo.  Environmental toxins that are in the air that we can't avoid from factories, farming chemicals, exhaust from vehicles, etc.  Prescription and over the counter medications which for the most part are purely chemicals.  Chemicals are not good for your body or your health.  While the medications may help your health condition the chemicals are hurting you at the same time.

Over time these various toxins continue building up in our bodies.  They don't have a way to leave the body on their own, instead they leach on to our bodies.  They make us sick, tired, cause aging.

How can I remove these toxins from my body by detoxing.  As I stated there are many forms of detoxification, today we are only going to discuss a few.

Ion Detox Foot Bath
A good Ion Detox Foot Bath is made by Optimum.  This process sets up a type of osmosis condition, which drains out toxins within your body.  When you first place your feet in the water, the water is clear.  By the end of the bath, the water has changed in color due to the cellular waste and impurities.  Impurities are pulled from the body, improving the body's natural resilience.  The cells show marked improvement after just one bath, are more hydrated, cells are working more efficiently and the meridians are balanced and energized.  With regular foot baths you can achieve cellular cleansing, anti-aging, boosted immune system, clearer skin complexion, activates the body's natural elimination system (including lymph nodes), joint/pain relief, weight loss, increased circulation, reduced stress and fatigue, reduced swelling/inflammation, improved joint stiffness, and more.
For this type of detoxification it's recommended that you have a 35 minute treatment two - three times a week until you have completed 14 sessions, this is considered a deep cleanse.  Can anyone use this treatment?  If you have a pacemaker you are not able to receive an Ion Detox Foot Bath.  Infants cannot receive this treatment.  Toddlers and children may receive a variated form of this treatment.  For more information contact Sarah Reynolds Spa.

Body Wraps
Another good method of detoxification is with body wraps.  Some body wraps such as our Seaweed and French Green Clay Wrap is great for detoxification.  French Green Clay and selected marine clays are infused with amino acids, Vitamin E, several extracts and Kelp are massaged into the skin, resulting in skin cell stimulation and detoxification.  If you are allergic to seaweed, iodine, or shellfish this wrap should be avoided.
Our Bioslmming wrap is also good for detoxification.  Along with detoxifying it fights cellulite, fat deposits, and stretch marks.
A series of wraps is recommended for the most benefit.  If you are claustrophobic you may not want to choose a wrap for detoxification.

Internal detoxification
You can also detox internally through the use of foods and supplements.  Juicing diets are great.  If you don't have time to juice, then I highly recommend Living Fuel.  Living Fuel is a powdered nutritional drink that is great for detoxification and balancing the body.  You just make a shake or smoothie with this powder and drink it in place of one meal a day.  I like to use it for breakfast.  For information on where to get Living Fuel contact Sarah Reynolds Spa.
Essential oils are also good for detoxing.  Lemon essential oil is especially good for this and easy to use.  Contact Sarah Reynolds Spa for more information on essential oils and where to get them.  Do not take any essential oils internally without discussing it with Sarah or an Aromatherapist.
Also good for starting a detoxification internally is to start with a Coffee enema.

Lymph Drainage
Manual Lymph Drainage is great to go along with any detox program.  The lymphatic system is what fights of disease, so it needs to be kept healthy and cleansed.  Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage should only be performed by a licensed professional.  Contact Sarah to schedule a Lymph Drainage Massage.

Reflexology
Reflexology is great any time to help promote optimal organ and nerve function, increase lymph flow and blood circulation.  Reflexology should only be performed by a licensed professional.

There are so many more ways to detox your body, we just don't have time to discuss them all.  All of the above methods discussed are available at Sarah Reynolds Spa.  Sarah is licensed and has training in all of these services.  To determine which method may be appropriate for you, schedule a consultation with Sarah Reynolds Spa.

Never start a detoxification program without first speaking to a healthcare professional.

Have a great and healthy day!

Jan. 19, 2016 What is a Malibu Treatment and why should I get one?

Today's topic is a Malibu Treatment.  What is it and why should I get one?

A Malibu Treatment is used to remove mineral deposits, chlorine, and other impurities from your hair.  This is an in salon treatment only, it cannot be performed at home.

Why do mineral deposits, chlorine, and other impurities need to be removed from my hair?
Mineral deposits, chlorine, and other impurities have a huge effect on your hair and the health of your hair.  They can cause hair challenges such as:
Challenges with manageability causing for use of more styling products to achieve desired look.
Dry texture with little shine.
Very dry feeling hair that lacks shine but appears to have some volume due to severe mineral buildup.
Frizzy
Difficulty achieving the hair color you want and difficulty keeping your color from fading.
Blonde and highlighted hair may lose vibrancy, appear muddy, lack shine, have a brassy or ash/green tones.
Constant breakage problems, hair lacks brightness.
Difficulty keeping a perm, hair feels dry and perm falls out.
Symptoms associated with dandruff, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea can flare up seasonally.
Extreme dry scalp/skin
Mineral build up can block follicles which then blocks hair growth.
Hair loss

Where do these minerals come from and how do they get in my hair?
The minerals, chlorine, and other impurities come from the water you shampoo your hair in and bathe in and the environment around you.

Everyone should receive a Malibu Treatment on a monthly basis.  It is not an expensive service and it will save you so many hair woes.  Your Malibu Treatment should be followed up with proper home care with the appropriate shampoo and treatment for you.  To help determine the best home care protocol for you, I recommend bringing in a fresh sample of your water that you shampoo with or bathe in.  Then the water can be tested to find out how high the mineral and chlorine content is of your water.  The closer you live to the water treatment facility, the more chlorine you will have in your water.  The water test is inexpensive as well, and well worth it to help save your hair.

A Malibu Treatment can be done as a service by itself or added to another service such as color or perm.

I recommend scheduling your Malibu Treatment with Sarah Reynolds Spa today!  And don't forget to bring your fresh water sample with you to be tested!

Enjoy your day!!
